Sense of Occurrence
A sense of occurrence is the sense that important things can—or might —happen here. Visitors have the feeling that they are a part of something larger than themselves. They feel connected to the place and the people around them. Places with a sense of occurrence encourage people to absorb what is happening, right then, in that space. That feeling stimulates their brain cells, enhances cognitive functions and reduces anxiety. Neuroscientists report that the quality of space can increase the quality of our cognitive analytical and affective faculties.
For architects and designers, the ability to create a sense of occurrence is key to developing enriched, immersive environments that leave visitors feeling alive, stimulated and connected.
