We’ve been selected as one of six international firms competing to lead a design team for this new school to be built in Doha. Read FPA’s media release and RIBA”s announcement.

TORONTO, April 28, 2011 — Farrow Partnership Architects has been selected as one of six international firms competing to lead a design team for the new Sherborne Qatar School to be built in Doha, Qatar. Sherborne Qatar is a joint venture between Sherborne School in Dorset, UK and Sheikh Abdullah Bin Ahmed Al Thani.

The school will provide facilities for 1,534 students from early childhood education to Year 13 and will prepare them for entry to the major universities of the world, as well as in Qatar.
The Sherborne Qatar competition is being organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) on behalf of the school and its board of governors. “The vision is to establish a school that offers the very best of Sherborne’s ethos and education within the cultural framework of Qatar, and so bring a unique educational experience to the region that will be suitable for children of expatriates working in Qatar and neighbouring Gulf states, as well as providing the skills for local Qataris on whom the future development of the country depends,” said the RIBA announcement.
Farrow Partnership Architects (FPA) partners have designed award-winning projects in the Middle East, across North America, the Caribbean and Asia. FPA’s experience in the Middle East includes recent projects that demonstrate understanding of local influences and requirements. The firm is committed to growing roots in the region to serve a variety of long-term projects in the fields of education, health care, hospitality and urban design.
“We are enthusiastic about our potential to deliver the best teaching and learning environment possible in a county that is globally known for its strong commitment to education,” said project design director Nadia Tobia, a partner with the firm. “We believe that a design with memorable emotional impact can greatly contribute to the transformational power of education.”
This stage of the competition involves presenting strategic design ideas and approaches that are developed in response to three key design considerations for the new School: expression of dual cultural identity, environmental sustainability and an education model for the 21st Century. The short-listed teams will present their design proposals at a final assessment to be held in Doha in mid-June 2011.
