York Central Hospital Master Plan

Richmond Hill, Ontario

York Central Hospital is a suburban community hospital experiencing growth in clinical services, severely aging infrastructure, and a limited site on which to grow. The project sought to establish three phased master plan options as part of a MoHLTC Stage 1 Business Case submission.

The architectural team worked closely with Agnew Peckham master programming and business case consultants, urban planning consultants and traffic consultants, and York Central Hospital facility staff to align programming requirements with clinical needs and existing facility conditions, completed as part of a comprehensive facility condition assessment. Components of the master plan options included significant phased growth in emergency, surgery and diagnostic imaging along with a new multi-storey inpatienttower, ambulatory care centre and public areas.

Innovative strategies for growth included land exchange, street reorientation and partnership opportunities with an adjacent educational facility. Farrow had previously worked with York Central Hospital to develop a series of pre-master plan development options to understand the capacity of the site and facility to support long-term growth.
